Berwick-Upon-Tweed is a town in Northumberland, England, the most northerly town in the whole of England. Just over two miles south of the Scottish border, on the mouth of the River Tweed, the town is close to Bowsden, Lower Burnmouth, Lowick, Doddington, Norham, and Wooler and is one of around 40 towns and villages in Northumberland in which Go2 has cottages or holidays lets available. The nearest main cities are Newcastle (population 189,863), Carlisle (population 71,773), and Ripon (which has a population of 16,468 according to the 2001 Census).
Once an Anglo-Saxon settlement in the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, Berwick-Upon-Tweek, was for hundreds of years the historic border between England and Scotland, and as such it changed hands several times between the two kingdoms. England took it back in 1482, and it has remained a part of England since. A traditional market town it is notable for the architecture of many of its buildings including the medieval town walls, the Elizabethan ramparts and the barrack buildings.
